เกาะ Gunkanijima ห่างจากเมืองนางาซากิ ประมาณ 15 กิโลเมตร
มีคนอยู่อาศัยตั้งแต่ 1887 ถึง 1974
ในช่วงสงครามโลกครั้งที่ 2 รัฐบาลญี่ปุ่นได้ใช้แรงงานเกาหลีและจีนเพื่อขุดถ่านหินในเกาะแห่งนี้
หลังสงครามโลกก็มีบริษัทแห่งหนึ่งเข้ามารับสมปทานต่อ
แต่หลังจากนั้นน้ำมันก็เริ่มเข้ามามีบทบาททำให้การขุดถ่านหินต้องยุติลง
พนักงานต่างๆ ก็อพยพออกจากเกาะแห่งนี้ และไม่อนุญาติให้ใครเข้าเกาะแห่งนี้
